FREE MEDICAL TREATMENT

A GHIC (European Health Insurance Card) is available to EU citizens and entitles them to free or discounted medical treatment while in an EU country. The cardholder follows the same rules as citizens of the country, so if their medical care is free, yours will be too.

The GHIC is a valuable resource, but it should not be considered an alternative to travel insurance.

GHIC CARD FOR PARTICIPANTS

All participants are required to possess a valid European Health Insurance Card (GHIC Card). This card allows individuals to receive medical treatment in another member state either for free or at a reduced cost if necessary, during their stay. This may be required in the event of an illness or injury, or if they have a pre-existing medical condition that requires treatment, such as kidney dialysis.

GETTING A GHIC CARD

Getting a GHIC Card is free of charge. You can apply for one on the GHIC website (https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/apply-for-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic/) or by calling the NHS at 0300 330 1350. Each card is valid for 5 years and covers one person only. If you have a child under 16, you can include them on your application, and both of you will receive separate GHIC Cards.

GHIC CARD COSTS

The GHIC Card is free, but it’s important to note that it’s not a substitute for travel insurance. Make sure to always carry the GHIC Card with you, in case you need medical treatment during your trip.
